If I invite you to my house for an investigation, what can I expect?

NJGHS on-site and in-home investigations are provided free of charge – the only time we ask for a donation is when we are traveling more than an hour, in order to pay for gas and tolls. Are reasons for performing an investigation are as follows:

  • To ascertain if the area is indeed haunted
  • To attempt to learn why the haunting is occurring
  • To capture evidence of the existence of spirits and life after death
  • To further the science of ghost hunting
  • To help families in dealing with their situation
  • To help spirits cross over to the “other side.”
  • In extreme cases, to help “cleanse” the area of negative activity.

After someone expresses interest in an investigation, we will usually talk to the them on the phone to conduct a mini interview and feel out the case. It is usually at this time that we set up a date for the investigation to take place. We bring an average of 2-6 members to the location, depending on the size of the location, severity of the case, and preferences of the homeowners.

Once we arrive on location, we will perform a more in-depth interview, and usually split the witnesses into two groups since it is easier to cover all of the details in this way. The interview process will usually take anywhere form 30-60 minutes. Afterwards, the team will have a small meeting amongst themselves to decide upon the best course of action, and then we begin a walk-through with the family. This is where the family will point out where certain things have occurred, spots of extreme activity, etc. We will take a few pictures and recordings at this time.

After the walk-through we decide on the “hot spots” and will either split up into several spots at once, or work all together in each location. Below are some examples of what we will do:

  • Take 35mm and Digital pictures
  • Take regular and infrared video
  • Set up digital and analog recorders in an empty area, or ask questions of the spirits with the recorders on
  • Set up motion detectors

Sometimes we have the people from the house join us with these investigative techniques if they are comfortable doing so. This can last anywhere from 1-3 hours depending on the size of the area, complexity of the case, and time constraints of the home owners. This usually concludes the investigation, and then we begin to analyze the data at home.

We also like to set up a second investigation a few days to a week afterwards, where a team member will return with a psychic or sensitive who has not been to the house before, and whom we have shared NO knowledge of the case with. We will walk through with them and see what they can pick up.

When all the data has been analyzed, we will contact the family with our conclusions, post it on our website if we have been granted permission, and also offer the homeowner a CD of all the information gathered.
