The house was built in 1947, and purchased in 1987 by Donna and Tony. An eye doctor, Dr. Halperin, previously owned the house.
Donna & Tony lived in a big, beautiful house in Hackensack prior to this. During the height of the real estate market in the 80's they decided to list their house “just to see what they could get”. It sold immediately for $250,000 cash. Donna remembers being in shock at that fact as now she would have to find a new home for her and her family to avoid being homeless. While sitting in McDonald's with her then 11-year-old son, a woman came up to them and said to Donna, “I have the house you're looking for”. It was very strange, but Donna followed the woman to this house and approached its then current owner. Donna intuitively knew about the in-ground pool in the backyard without ever having seen it and right away asked how deep it was. Donna also “knew” that this was her house. So without a realtor, the deal went through in CASH and her family moved in. The sellers moved to around the corner – they had only had the house in their ownership for 6 months.
The first strange event took place during the move-in. The kitchen floor was a mess from the previous owners' pets so Tony and his son replaced it with peel-n-stick tiles and the next day the new refrigerator was delivered. The new fridge was not working properly and Tony pulled it away from the wall to see what was the matter and he found several little items that were not there before. These items appeared to be from another time – like that of the 1950's. (see pictures below)
Recently, they had a new floor installed in the kitchen and a new refrigerator delivered as well. The floor was down and all was well. The new fridge came and worked just fine, but Tony – being a “clean freak” – wanted to clean behind the new fridge nonetheless. When he pulled the fridge out from the wall to clean, he again found several more 1950's items of little toys, a comb, etc.
The other strange “happening” in this household is the overwhelming feeling of compulsion that Donna gets to go out and buy certain furnishings and collectibles. It's as if she is directed from some unseen force. Originally, they decorated the house in her taste of modern, black lacquer furniture. Over time, she was compelled to replace those items of hers with maple furnishings of the 1950's.
Besides finding items behind the fridge twice now, the rare occurrence of “apports” takes place quite frequently in the dining room. Items from the past literally fall through the ceiling and land on the dining room table as in the original “Poltergeist” movie, but without the flash of light and Hollywood dramatics.
Two key apports are the eyeglass case of the former doctor imprinted with his name and the house address that appeared in the basement which was his office and was where he died and the sterling silver coffin plaque of a three year old boy which appeared on Donna & Tony's bed that she discovered one day when returning to her room from taking a shower.
Donna reported that her 8 grandchildren are terrified of the finished basement even though it appears like a kid haven with a pool table, TV/VCR, videos, music etc. She also reported that it is commonplace to find things moved out of their place like the chairs being rearranged or the beds being unmade after she has made them. She recounted the time there was music from the 1940's playing over the doorbell box in the living room – she had to beat the thing with a broom handle to break it to make it stop.
The electrical disturbances are incredible. PSEG (Public Service Electric Gas Company) has had to install a temporary generator because the power surge burned out the wiring in the house. Donna & Tony have gone through 27 light bulbs in the past 3 weeks! (Interesting to note that this coincides with the time they agreed to have us come up and investigate!) PSEG reported that the power surging through the house was enough to light the entire Paramus Park Mall. PSEG cannot account for this, as it is the only house on this block having such a “disturbance”.
One item that Donnas was “directed” to purchase was an old tin lunch box. When she brought it home and placed it in the basement, it banged around furiously as if agitated by not being placed where “it” wanted to be. She tried several places through out the home until placing it on the shelf above her bed – finally – all was quiet with the lunch box.
Upon entering the home, we noticed an uncomfortable energy or presence. However, we tried to ignore it and get down to business. We conducted the questionnaire segment of the interview. We then did a walk-thru while taking pictures and continuing to audio record.
Through out the evening orbs were captured on digital in the family room. Tad captured an orb in the one bedroom upstairs and some in the basement. He also got some orbs in motion in the bedroom on night vision video.
The most startling part of the evening's investigation took place around 9:20 PM. We were all in the basement. After a while, L'Aura complained how cold she was and wanted to return upstairs. She entered the kitchen and stopped dead in her tracks noticing that 3 chairs were moved! Yes, two were pulled from the kitchen table and the third was pulled from the little kitchen desk. All 3 were turned to face each other as if a conversation had been taking place there. She yelled down stairs to ask if anyone had been up in the kitchen to move the chairs. Tad's eyes lit up as he came up the stairs while explaining and confirming that everyone was in the basement the whole time. Donna was very blasé about the event explaining that it happens all the time.
The investigators then re-set the chairs and set up Tad's video camera pointing directly at them and went back downstairs. They waited about 10 minutes, but nothing. The event did not repeat itself that night.
There is definitely a ghost or two present in the house. It seems to be that of the eye doctor and the little boy, "Freddy" whose plaque was found. A cleansing was performed at the close of the investigation with white candles, white sage and incense. The energy definitely shifted after that as the investigative crew and Donna & Tony sat down to coffee and donuts and a few good laughs.
The fact that Donna experienced being pinned against a wall in the hallway prior to our arrival as if the spirit was angry with her for having contacted a ghost hunting team now seemed a distant memory. (We hope it stays that way.)
Picture Evidence
These are a number of the items mention above that were discovered at the house behind the refrigerator at different times. The owners claim that they have knowledge of where these items came from, but that they would mysteriously appear inside of the house.
This is a close-up of the eyeglass case that was discovered in the basement of the home. It bears the name and address of the doctor that had dies in the home, and seemed to materialize in the same room as that of his death, years before.
This is a shot showing some orbs that were captured inside of the home
