Protocols for Investigating - Lesson Four

Professionalism and Reverence

Always show reverence and respect for the deceased while investigating a cemetery. Additionally, show respect for the cemetery itself again by not eating, drinking, or smoking and contributing to the litter.

Pay close attention to the “No trespassing” signs if posted at the entrance of a cemetery. You must secure permission prior to investigating either from the caretaker or parish head if a church cemetery. Sometimes you can register with the local police department to have permission to be in the cemetery after dusk. I prefer to have written permission from the cemetery owner/caretaker, and still check in with the local police force. This way, they know and can calm any fearful calls they receive from neighbors who live in close proximity to the cemetery and are freaked out seeing flashing lights going off!
